Dreams have always fascinated me—the way they distort reality, shifting seamlessly between the surreal and the familiar. Perpetual Dream Machine explores the ethereal landscape of dreams, merging the evocative sounds of the orchestra with the boundless imagination of the subconscious mind. In dreams, we often find ourselves thrust into the middle of a story, with no sense of how it began. Similarly, this work begins with an explosive gesture, hurling the listener into a swirling world of possibility. The opening movement unfolds with fluidity and unpredictability, mirroring the dream’s ability to shift effortlessly between contrasting scenes and emotions. It builds to a climactic burst of brightness before dissolving into darkness, leading to a haunting and ritualistic English Horn solo. This foreboding passage evolves into a frenzied chase, culminating in a powerful statement of Gustav Mahler’s iconic 9-note chord from his unfinished Tenth Symphony. The final section reflects the epiphanies and transformative revelations often experienced in dreams. Bursts of energy alternate with moments of delicate introspection, conveyed through shimmering harmonics in the violins and vibraphone. As themes from the opening movement resurface, now fully realized, the music surges toward an electrifying conclusion. Finally unleashed by the infinite possibilities of the subconscious mind, a Perpetual Dream Machine.
